Deimatic Aposematic
Visual Essay
2020
A visual essay on human deimatic and aposematic behaviour in clothing, the aim of appearing bigger, stronger and imposing towards others.
Initiated by a fascination with the thick broad clothing from the paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger of the 16th century upper class, mainly royals and Hanze tradesmen from northwestern Europe. Amidst the small ice age and lack of domestic insulation and heating, these people wear broad lavish fabrics and furs, often layered four to five times over.
However this visual essay focuses on the other reason for these broad silhouettes: the deimatic behaviour of people, impressing and dominating each other in seeming bigger. Mainly focusing on the pyramid-like shape of the head on top of broad shoulders, the pages put individuals dressed in this fashion next to what they either consciously or subconsciously associate themselves with such as animals, buildings, ships, tanks, and so forth.
