Unknown City: In Loving Memory of Eindhoven’s Lost History’

Intervention
2019

Intervention that explains the stories behind Eindhovens lost cityscape and cultural heritage.

Eindhoven is one of the most modern and fastest growing cities in the Netherlands.
Despite being the home of a massive design industry, it is widely regarded as one of the ugliest soulless cities in the Netherlands.

This intervention studies how this came to be and gives the general public a look into the story of Eindhovens disappeared cityscape.

The lack of historical heritage is often explained through the city’s vicious bombardment in the second world war. However research in the archives shows many of the classic buildings and canals were destroyed due to the municipality’s goal of becoming the most modern city of the Netherlands.

The intervention is for Eindhovens inhabitants to get to know the full story of what happened to the city. This is done by reversing the action of destroying stories through demolishment. Participants are invited to demolish plaster blocks which upon breaking reveal the story of the building and Eindhoven through personal memories of inhabitants, public data and news articles.
